New Periodic Variables from the Hipparcos Epoch Photometry
نویسندگان
چکیده
Two selection statistics are used to extract new candidate periodic variables from the epoch photometry of the Hipparcos catalogue. The primary selection criterion is a signal to noise ratio. The dependence of this statistic on the number of observations is calibrated using about 30 000 randomly permuted Hipparcos datasets. A significance level of 0.1% is used to extract a first batch of candidate variables. The second criterion requires that the optimal frequency be unaffected if the data are de-trended by low order polynomials. We find 2675 new candidate periodic variables, of which the majority (2082) are from the Hipparcos “unsolved” variables. Potential problems with the interpretation of the data (e.g. aliasing) are discussed.

The Hipparcos Photometry and Variability Annexes
A summary of the photometric data obtained by the Hipparcos and Tycho missions is presented. The photometric signals and their reduction to magnitudes are described, as well as the passbands and their evolution. The main mission photometry provided on average 110 observations for each of the 118 000 stars observed during the mission. The accuracies for this epoch photometry range from a few mil...
متن کاملHow many Hipparcos Variability-Induced Movers are genuine binaries?
Hipparcos observations of some variable stars, and especially of long-period (e.g. Mira) variables, reveal a motion of the photocenter correlated with the brightness variation (variability-induced mover – VIM), suggesting the presence of a binary companion. A re-analysis of the Hipparcos photometric and astrometric data does not confirm the VIM solution for 62 among the 288 VIM objects (21%) in...
متن کاملPeriod recovery success rate expected with Gaia
The Gaia satellite was selected as a cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) in October 2000 and confirmed in 2002 with a current target launch date of 2011. The Gaia mission will gather on the same observational principles as hipparcos detailed astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic properties of about 1 billion sources brighter than mag V = 20. The nature of the measured ob...
متن کاملThe Hipparcos mission: photometric data
An overview of the Hipparcos and Tycho photometric data is presented, with reference to the main aspects of the data reductions and the overall quality and quantity of the results. The data have been presented in three forms: as mean values in the astrometric catalogues, as epoch photometry, and as interpreted results of the variability analysis, which is also briefly described.
متن کاملThe Variability of R,n,c Stars from Hipparcos and Aavso Data
Accurate photometry was obtained for all programme stars during the 3.3-year HIPPARCOS mission. The final observing programme included several hundred Mirae (M), semiregular (SR) long-period and irregular (L) variables. A detailed calibration of the aging of the optics allowed the evaluation of very precise magnitudes over the whole range of star colours. Since the time coverage of the satellit...
